The board of directors met on October 14th and selected a theme for 2011...... 'Crossing Borders'. We'll continue to work on last year's theme 'Young Folks, Old Stuff, New Connections', but the new theme will allow us to do some things with a specific emphasis and focus. We talked about a variety of methods that would bring the theme to life in the coming year....... more on that to come. Our next meeting is scheduled for 12/3/10, somewhere in the Essex Junction area, partly to be able to take in the Vermont International Festival starting that evening at the Champlain Valley Exposition.
Events for Tom
Some very exciting events with some long time friends in November and December that serve in part to raise funds for the Tom Sustic Fund, supporting families with children with cancer...... Greg Brown on 11/5, the Savoy Family Band on 11/14, and Nowell Sing We Clear on 12/12.
Fiddleheads
Fiddleheads will continue to allow anyone who chooses to join in a chance to learn and perform traditional fiddle music associated with northern Vermont. The group continues its first Saturday rehearsals on 11/6 at the Burlington Violin Shop...... guest instructor will be Tim Cummings on 11/6 and Joanne Garton on 12/4. The group plays again at the Children's Memorial Service at Ira Allen Chapel at UVM on 11/7, does a contra dance on 11/12 in St. Albans.
Young Tradition
Young Tradition continues to support young folks doing old stuff with a wide range of activities, including Young Tradition Weekend, Trad Camp, Young Tradition Showcases at various festivals and venues in the region..... the next couple of months are no exception. We're doing our monthly music session on Baird 5 at Fletcher Allen Health Care on 10/25. We're expecting to be represented at the Vermont Parks and Recreation Association performer showcase on 11/18 in Quechee, a first situation like it for us. We'll be back at First Night! Burlington on New Year's Eve with some past winners of the annual Young Tradition Weekend..... Duncan Yandell, Roland Clark, Hannah Beth Crary, the Irregulars, maybe Anna Roberts-Gevalt, and others. We're doing a showcase on 2/5/11 as part of the Burlington Winter Festival, planning to make it a teacher/student, mentor/mentee, parent/child showcase..... young folks singing, playing and/or dancing with some of the older folks who have helped them along, guided them, taught and nurtured them. We're doing our first of what we're intending to be an annual partnership with the Dance Flurry in Saratoga Springs in February, featuring the Windborne Trio and the Irregulars, winners from last year's Young Tradition Weekend.
We've created a donation opportunity using PayPal on the web site, which we hope you'll consider if the types of things we're doing feels worthy of a contribution.
We'll be scheduling a fundraising dinner at a Burlington restaurant in the next couple of months, another chance to enjoy some of the young performers associated with Young Tradition Vermont, make a contribution to the effort, and some great food. We'll also be writing some grant proposals..... if you've got suggestions/ideas about grant sources, business sponsors, or presenting partners who's interest might be a good match, let us know.
This blog is part of an effort to sharpen/focus our marketing efforts and increasing our use of social networks. Thanks to several folks for helping us with that...... Tim Volk, Andy Vota, Jim Burns, Dana Whittle. Let us know what you think! If you can pass forward posters, blog posts, and other information to networks of contacts and friends, we'd be eternally grateful!
